After the Tour de France concluded outside Paris for the first time in history, the eyes of the cycling world turn to the French capital nearly a week after the finish of La Grande Boucle. Paris is set to host the Summer Olympics of the XXXIII Olympiad. On August 3 and 4, the men's and women's peloton will compete on the famous Montmartre hill for gold, silver, and bronze medals. But first, on Saturday, July 27, it's the turn of the time trialists to battle for their quadrennial gold in the race against the clock.

Let's delve a bit deeper into that time trial. Starting with the men's category.

The organizers of the Olympic Games have already published the list of participants for the time trial. Let's take a look at the top contenders.

Half of the top 20 from the time trial rankings will start at the Esplanade des Invalides, in front of the famous and beautiful Hôtel des Invalides in the center of Paris. Notable absentees include Slovenians Tadej Pogačar, the most recent winner of the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, and defending champion Primož Roglič. Additionally, renowned time trialists such as João Almeida, Jonas Vingegaard, and Juan Ayuso will also not be participating. It seems they have all carefully examined the course and concluded that other competitors have better chances of winning.

Enough about who isn't there. Who is participating? In fact, all the top contenders will be present. Let's list them, ranked by their points in the time trial discipline over the past two years.

This gives us a clear picture of who the top contenders for the gold medal are. Over the past two years, Remco Evenepoel has proudly led the list. Behind him is the time trial powerhouse Filippo Ganna, followed at a distance by specialists such as Stefan Küng, Magnus Sheffield, and Brandon McNulty. Outside the top five are the surprising 2022 World Time Trial Champion Tobias Foss, last year's major time trial revelation Joshua Tarling, and one of the favorites for a medal in Paris, Wout van Aert.
Let's take a look at how these top contenders have performed throughout their careers so far. In what percentage of their completed time trials have the participants in the Olympic time trial finished in the top 5?

This brings us to a first echelon of main contenders for the gold medal. Let's consider Joshua Tarling, Remco Evenepoel, Filippo Ganna, Wout van Aert, and Stefan Küng as the quintet of top favorites. We'll leave out outsiders like Sheffield, McNulty, and Wærenskjold for now.
Ganna Giro
Now, let's take a look at the characteristics of the course that these riders will face in Paris.

The time trial course is flat and relatively short for an Olympic championship. In fact, it is the Olympic time trial with the fewest elevation gains and the shortest distance in modern Olympic history.

The Olympic time trial is the seventh longest time trial of the season. The riders will tackle 125 meters of elevation over a distance of 32.4 kilometers through the streets of Paris, which translates to 3.86 meters of elevation per kilometer. We've found 7 time trials with similar characteristics to the Olympic time trial over the past 3 years: the European Championships in 2021 and 2023, Stage 10 of the Vuelta in 2022 and 2023, and time trials in the Tour de Suisse (2022), the Critérium du Dauphiné (2022), and the Giro d'Italia (2023).

Let's see how our key contenders performed in these events.

A few observations can be made about the results above. First, we see that Stefan Küng is the only rider who hasn’t podiumed in time trials similar to the Olympic time trial in the past two seasons. Another observation is that Wout van Aert has never won such a time trial against international competition (excluding national championships).

Joshua Tarling, on the other hand, did win in his only participation in a similar time trial. At last year’s European Championships, he blew away the competition, including Stefan Bissegger and Wout van Aert. This leaves us with Remco Evenepoel and Filippo Ganna. The Belgian rider has participated in such time trials the most frequently, five times, and won three of them. Notably, he has never beaten Ganna in any of these time trials. In the two instances he didn't win, the Italian finished ahead of Evenepoel. Ganna, in turn, won two of the three time trials in this selection and finished second in the first one, the European Championships three years ago, which was won by Küng.

Tarling Dauphiné
The three riders winning a time trial similar to the Olympic parcours in Paris are (coincidentally) also the riders with the best time trial shape calculated over the current season. Youngster Joshua Tarling podiumed on all of his three time trials this season. Ganna did that in 5 out of 6 time trials, Evenpoel in 4 out of 5.

There's another interesting statistic. It has never happened that an Olympic time trial champion did not participate (at least start) in the Tour de France prior to the Games. In this regard, Evenepoel, who also showed sublime form in the Tour de France, would have an advantage. The course, where he can combine his exceptionally aerodynamic riding position with his high wattage, suits him perfectly. Moreover, Evenepoel won his last head-to-head time trial battles against both Tarling and Ganna. Thus, the Belgian will be the man to beat in Paris, closely followed by Filippo Ganna and Joshua Tarling. These three riders also dominated the recent World Championship.

For Wout van Aert, a podium finish would be an outstanding achievement. For Küng, a battle for a top-five spot with competitors like Sheffield and McNulty is the most likely scenario.

Below are more in depth head-to-head analyses between the three main contenders for gold: Evenepoel, Ganna and Tarling.
