Wiebes-Kopecky
Fourteen of the current top twenty one-day racers will line up at the start in Paris. There are no major absentees, aside from the tactical decisions that various national coaches have to make due to the small team sizes allowed in the Olympic road race. For example, Italy prefers sprinter [Elisa Balsamo] over [Chiara Consonni], and the Netherlands leaves [European champion] [Mischa Bredewold] and [Shirin van Anrooij] at home.
The Olympic course is 157.6 kilometers long, just 2.4 kilometers under the official maximum distance, although in the Women's World Tour, a few extra kilometers are sometimes overlooked. The course includes 1648 meters of elevation gain, spread over numerous shorter, not-too-steep climbs and a flat finish with the Eiffel Tower in sight. The [Profile Score] is 57.

First, let's look at the element of distance. Which riders have scored the most points in relatively longer races, those over 140 kilometers, since 2019?

[Lotte Kopecky] scores the best by a significant margin. Behind her are sprint powerhouses [Wiebes] and Balsamo, followed by more classic riders like [Vos], [Longo Borghini], and [Vollering]. These six form a group of riders who have scored more than 2000 PCS points in longer races since 2019. Trailing further behind are other top contenders such as [Niewiadoma], Olympic time trial champion [Brown], and [Ludwig].

Another important element is the difficulty of the course. As mentioned, the PCS Profile Score of the Olympic course is 57. This is relatively average for a challenging hilly course. If the race had finished uphill, the score would have been significantly higher.

Anyway. Which riders have scored the best in the Profile Score range of 37 to 77 over the past 12 months?

Once again, Kopecky emerges as number one, but behind her, the more classic riders move up in the rankings, surpassing the pure sprinters.
For example, look at the difference in points between Lorena Wiebes, who is ranked 5th, and her compatriot Marianne Vos, who is ranked 4th. The gap is quite significant.
Based on what we know, we select a group of eight riders as the top contenders for Olympic gold. Their names are: Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini, Lorena Wiebes, Marianne Vos, Kasia Niewiadoma, and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig. We add the home favourite and in-form rider [Juliette Labous] to this list.

With these riders, we look at courses that somewhat resemble the Olympic road race. Criteria: one-day races, at least 140 kilometers long, at least 1250 meters of elevation gain, no long climbs, and a Profile Score between 35 and 79.

From this formula, nine races from the past three seasons emerge that match the characteristics of the Paris race and can provide insights into the favourites for Olympic gold.

Let's see how our group of favourites performed in these races:

The same trend is visible as in the previous lists. Lotte Kopecky is the most successful rider on courses similar to the Olympic road race in Paris. The Belgian world champion competed in 5 of these races over the past three seasons and won three of them. She never finished outside the top 5.

Demi Vollering also performs exceptionally well on such courses, with three second-place finishes and one victory. It is noteworthy, however, that the Dutch champion has never beaten Kopecky in a direct duel on a course resembling the one in Paris over the past three seasons.

Additionally, the top form of Italian leader Elisa Longo Borghini is also reflected in these figures, evidenced by her win in the [Tour of Flanders] this year, where she defeated nearly all the other medal contenders.
In summary, Lotte Kopecky is the clear top favourite for Olympic gold. However, the situation behind the Belgian rider is quite interesting. Based on the data we've reviewed, one might expect Demi Vollering to be the closest contender to Kopecky, but the situation appears to be different.

Given that Kopecky will encounter a course in Paris that suits her perfectly, and considering our data showing Vollering's difficulty in beating her teammate at [Team SD-Worx - Protime] in such races, the Dutch team, led by coach [Loes Gunnewijk], is likely to adopt a different strategy. Instead of facing Kopecky head-on, they will use specific and distinctive strengths. Lorena Wiebes, with her sprinting prowess, is a key asset. The Dutch team’s Plan A will most likely be to protect Wiebes with top teammates like [Ellen van Dijk] and Marianne Vos, aiming to force a sprint finish in Paris. This strategy appears to offer the best chance for Dutch Olympic gold, especially considering the not-too-steep, short climbs to Montmartre in the final and Wiebes's improved climbing ability this year, as she has focused all her efforts on winning Olympic gold.

With Vollering and Vos, the Dutch team also has two strong potential leaders who can counter any Kopecky attacks if necessary.
“Wiebes
The Italian team has options for various scenarios. Elisa Longo Borghini is a formidable competitor if it comes down to a Kopecky scenario. If the race turns into a sprint, Elisa Balsamo is a strong sprinter for the Italians.

Juliette Labous, aiming to capitalize on her strong form for the home crowd, and Kasia Niewiadoma, who has been racing more strategically this season compared to previous years, are also dangerous contenders. Niewiadoma’s strategic racing has already proven effective, as seen in the [Flèche Wallonne].

Outsiders like Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, Liane Lippert, or time trial medalists Grace Brown and [Anna Henderson] should also be watched closely.
Figure 5. Top-3 percentage in one day races.
When we look at how often each country's 'Plan A' finishes on the podium in one-day races - where everything must fall into place at a single moment - Lorena Wiebes stands out significantly with her sprinting abilities. It will be crucial for the other favourites to find a way to get rid of her before Trocadéro...
