Origin story

As a counterbalance to the many popular Italian races held primarily in the north of the country, the Velo Club Forze Sportive Romane announced the Tre Giorni del Sud (Three Days of the South) in 1965. When the race first appeared on the calendar in 1966, it was renamed Tirreno-Adriatico, reflecting its three-stage route from Rome, near the Tyrrhenian Sea on Italy’s west coast, to Pescara on the Adriatic coast in the east.

The race quickly developed into a favourite among stage racers and became a key preparation event for Milan-San Remo for classics specialists.
